When you are out in the neighborhood, check out the new little library at 617 East Hamilton Avenue, in front of the First Church of Christ, Scientist (Christian Science) church. The little library was designed and built by Riley Thorndike for his Eagle Scout project. Riley is a senior at State College Area High School and a member of Troop 31. He attends the Christian Science Sunday School. Riley worked individually, as well as led a group of fellow Scouts, adults, and other volunteers for a combined 100+ hours on this Eagle Scout project for our community.
Riley was diligent in all aspects of the project from inception of the
idea and multiple CADD designs and revisions to cardboard mock-ups, cutting and assembling the wood, digging a deep hole, and finally installing the box.
The church hired Brock Dilling, an artist from Alexandria, PA, to design and paint a bright array of sunflowers that adorn three sides of the box. Visitors will also see a cute squirrel, hanging upside down on the front panel, inviting passersby to open the door to the little library.
The box is stocked with a wide variety of books for children and adults, some of which come from the AAUW State College used book sale. There are biographies, fiction, nonfiction, spirituality, religion, cookbooks, and other great treasures. We are thrilled to provide this little library in our neighborhood. We invite you to stop by and take a book or share a book!
